Reciprocal inhibition is a term used in muscle physiology whereby when one muscle contracts (e.g. the bicep) its antagonist relaxes (i.e. the triceps) so that movement can occur within the joint (i.e. elbow flexion).  I was reminded of the beauty of this divine design when reflecting on our “Contrast Brings Clarity” study of the LDS and biblical gospels I recently taught at the YMCA.

Scott, an astute LDS lawyer, attended all six of our classes.  And although I addressed in detail some difficult, if not controversial, teachings of LDS General Authorities, Scott resolved to return each Wednesday night to perhaps glean from the lessons and expand his spiritual horizons.  Drawing on our analogy from reciprocal inhibition I suspect that had I not taught in a Christ-like manner (i.e. contracted my bicep), Scott would have never been comfortable enough (i.e. relaxed his triceps) to return so that learning could continue (i.e. elbow flexion).

Moreover, being an attorney Scott frequently interjected his opinions and even challenged my position.  Here again I see the Master in motion because had Scott not scrutinized and criticized in a Christ-like manner (i.e. contracted his triceps), I would have never been comfortable enough (i.e. relaxed my bicep) to allow him to continue participating (i.e. elbow extension).

The common denominator in all of this movement of the Spirit, of course, was our Christ-like conduct.  Easier said than done when the stakes and emotions are so high?  You bet!  But I submit to you that because both Scott and I had a solid understanding of the moral and ethical teachings of Christ we were better able to model the LORD’s behavior—a lesson all too often not well learned by some Evangelicals.

The point of our “Contrast Brings Clarity” class, however, was not that we conduct ourselves like Christ in order to be saved, but because we are saved.  This is the glorious gospel of salvation by grace through faith in Christ.  And because Scott now has a deeper understanding of the biblical Gospel he is all the more culpable for not receiving it—a concept with which lawyers in particular are intimately familiar.

But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect. (1 Peter 3:15 NIV)
