 "G. Whiz!" Blog
Tuesday, 30 June 2009

This past month STS Ministries hosted a group of high school missionaries from Banner Christian School (BCS) in Richmond, Virginia.  Among the many activities I had planned for them in addition to their “Mission to Mormons” at Brigham Young University–Idaho in Rexburg were two separate meetings with LDS missionaries in Idaho Falls followed by attending an LDS sacrament service.

An LDS Stake President (hereafter referred to as “President Smith”) was contacted by Paul Whittington of STS Ministries to see if he would help facilitate at least two of the above events.  President Smith agreed to do just that and put a local LDS missionary (hereafter referred to as “Elder A”) in touch with me to make all of the arrangements.  Before the BCS group met with Elder A an opportunity to meet with two other LDS missionaries (hereafter referred to as “Elder B” and “Elder C”) presented itself.

Following our meeting with Elders B and C, Elder A was informed that I was “Bible bashing” and being “contentious.”  All subsequent events were then cancelled by Elder A, and this, apparently at the directive of President Smith and perhaps others.

The PDF file below is a copy of the letter I sent to President Smith.

In the interest of confidentiality I will not share President Smith’s response to my letter.  Suffice it to say, no action was taken by President Smith, and this, because of the nature of my ministry to Latter-day Saints.

You, the reader, may draw your own conclusions.

Charis kai eirene (Grace and peace), Mike

Why did you need to be accompanied by a missionary to the service? Visitors are always welcome. I can see your disappointment in things not working out how you planned. However, your tone seems to somewhat echo the tone you are accusing these elders of having with you. I don't know if you wrote this to justify your anger towards the LDS and the missionaries, but it came across that way. We all need to be careful to not cast judgements on each other (which I admit, I have cast judgements on you, and in doing so, need to repent). This letter was a huge eye opener for me to build up, not tear down. To love, and not judge.

I agree that we need to mutually work together to better the world, and that will not happen by trying to prove each other wrong.

Andy, Thank you for taking the time to read this rather long blog and for writing your response. I, in turn, will take your comments to heart.

But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect. (1 Peter 3:15 NIV)
